Even the smallest gardens in urban areas can be very pleasing and beautiful. For help designing or laying out your garden we have the garden resource for you. The following books are great for design, and for plant selection. The Western Garden Book by Sunset is one of the best resources you can have. It has answers to most of your questions and I use it constantly. There are also Sunset books for other parts of the country (Midwest and East)

These resources will help you get started with ideas. It helps to do a rough drawing of how you want your garden to look. On the right of this page are several posts that will give you some ideas. You especially want to look at soil improvement, and then go to the links on types of gardens you want.

One of the problems facing many gardeners in the West is the use of precious water. Water wise gardening is a hot topic and home owners in areas with water shortages are faced with how to maintain a nice garden and landscape and limit the use of water. Many homeowners are replacing thirsty lawns with drought tolerant plants and bark or mulch. There’s even a government “Cash For Grass” rebate program that many are taking advantage of. These programs pay a set dollar amount per square foot of grass that is replaced with either hardscape (rock, paving, concrete, etc) or bark with native drought tolerant plants on a water conscious drip system. It is recommended that you do a combination of both of these elements, as it adds design interest. Some yards have simulated stream beds winding through, and then plantings on either side which is very pleasing. If you’re especially clever, you can do the design and work yourself, but many people hire an expert landscaper for their projects.
Check out the topics in the right column for drip systems, drought tolerant plants, design ideas etc.   Also, the link below is a wonderful website for lots of gardening goodies that you may need or want.

Water wise gardens are where we need to go for good conservation. For drought tolerant plants for your area you need to first determine which zone you live in. Most gardening books will indicate in which zones a plant will fare best . You usually will find a map of zones in larger gardening books. Again, the Sunset one is excellent. I recommend that you determine your gardening zone before you purchase any plant material, so you have a better chance of that plant surviving, especially if you have severe weather patterns. Be sure and check out the categories in the right column for additional information. Especially the post about Dri Water. This is an excellent product for conserving water. It’s very useful when you go on vacation. You can use it in your potted plants to water them while you’re away.

Another important factor to consider when planning your garden or yard, is determining the exposure to sun or shade that the plantings will have. Be careful to read labels, as they will tell you if the plant needs full sun, partial shade or full shade. The shade plants will do well on the north or east side of your house. East gets morning sun. Of course, if you have lots of trees or overhang from the house, that will provide the needed shade. South and west are your sunny areas and there are many plants that will do well there.
My best advice is, don’t be in a hurry. Do your homework. Research the garden books for the plants you like and determine their needs (water, exposure, type of soil) for the best results.
